Reverse it.

I went to an event the other night where people were sharing Life Hacks. The Hacks varied - from how to get cash-back from changing flight prices (Delta has a price adjustment scheme), to how to set personal goals.

One woman had a tip about getting yourself to take more risks: When she feels unsure about taking a risk, she reverses the question.

  • Instead of asking herself: what's the cost of taking this action?
  • She asks herself: what's the risk of NOT taking this action?

You want to speak up in a meeting? Scary. But what's the risk of never speaking up? Worse. You want to ask someone out? Also scary. But if you never try, you'll never know.

Next time you're feeling unsure about a new path (as I have felt many times while launching HAIL), try reversing the question: what's the cost of not pursuing it? You may end up in a more confident mindset.
